How I created a wardrobe I love…and you can too!

January 18, 2017

It’s time to for you to get ready. You go to your closet to find that perfect outfit. The one that fits, is on trend, and makes you feel like you kind of have your life together. Instead, you have been sifting through your clothes for 4o minutes, nothing fits right, everything you pull out looks dated. You give up and end up curled in a ball on top of the clothes you have thrown into the “no” pile on the floor. Now you’re running late, you despise everyone, and you start thinking of ways you can get out of whatever plans you have. Without admitting the real reason, of course. You are frustrated with your wardrobe. Has anyone ever been here? I know I have! That’s why I had to take control of my closet. Now that the getting dress meltdowns have ended, I decided to share my steps that helped me create a wardrobe I love and will hopefully help you too!

Discover your style-This is the fun part. Go online or on Pinterest and create a board with outfits you like or inspire you. Also, go through some current photos of yourself. Exam which outfits you felt good wearing and what really flattered your shape. What you will probably discover from all these pictures is that there is a common theme. You may even find that you always repeat the same outfit with different pieces or, what some describe as a “uniform”. What you may also find is that there a large disconnect between the items you currently have and the style you are looking to have. Either way, embrace your uniform. This will make it easier for you to decide what pieces to keep or buy for your wardrobe. It does not make sense to have a closet full of skirts and dresses if you pick the jeans and tee to wear 9 times out of 10.

Cleaning out your wardrobe– This one should be a given, but the next step you should take is examining what you currently have. So, take absolutely everything out of your closet. Then be extremely picky about what will return. Use the “if this was in the store, would I purchase it again?” method.  Also, decide if the items goes with your uniform and the direction you are trying to take your style. Take the time to try everything on. If it no longer fits or is damaged-get rid of it. Getting rid of it could mean selling it on a website or app, swapping items with friends, donating it, or discarding if it is no longer wearable.

Organize and Prettify– Yes, I said prettify. There is so much more appeal in getting dressed when things are organized and aesthetically pleasing.  Also, you should now have plenty of room to spare in your closet if you were truly brutal with your purging process. More is just more in the case of clothes. It is actually beneficial to have a smaller wardrobe lined with pieces you love and make sense for your current lifestyle. Highly consider storing out -of -season pieces or creating a special rack for your current season/new purchase items. This will help keep certain items in view and make it easy to find an outfit that is appropriate for the season. Unless, you live in Texas. Then good luck trying to figure out what season we are in!

Fill the holes– Now that you have discovered your style and curated your current wardrobe, it is time to fill any holes you may have. Firstly, cover the basics. If you aren’t sure what the basics for a wardrobe are, stay tuned- I may do a post on that in the future. For now, just know that the basics are versatile pieces that usually serve as the base of an outfit. Once you have the basics covered, start to shop for seasonal items that are on trend or statement pieces that will keep your wardrobe fresh and current. Try to refrain from buying more that five pieces per season because, you probably won’t wear everything. Instead, refer back to your style inspiration board and think about your “uniform”. Then, look at what is in style and spend a little extra money on quality items that will blend nicely with your current wardrobe and lifestyle. Also, when considering purchasing a piece, think of your wardrobe and try and make three different outfits with the item. If you can’t, really reconsider your purchase because, it probably is not something that is fitting for you.

Well, I know that it seems like a lot of work, but it is worth it. Trust me, when you stop crying on your closet floor you will thank me!

My Favorite Moments of 2016

December 30, 2016

I can hardly believe this year is already over, it has truly flown by. As with any year, my 2016  has been filled with several ups and downs, but I have been blessed. I am very grateful for all of the things I have been able to see and do this year, as well as, the people I have been able to spend time with. This year has truly had some milestones for me-obviously turning 3o was a big one, as well as, pursing my passions and creating this blog. Hopefully, taking you guys on this journey of my thirties will help inspire you to pursue your own dreams, learn some new things and just be able to appreciate the little victories in life. Last year, I set a goal for myself to record more moments in my life so that at the end of the year, I could create a short video that would allow me to reflect on all the wonderful memories I had. I have posted this video below for you all to join me in celebrating the great times in 2016 and look forward to creating wonderful new memories in 2017. I hope everyone has a blessed New Year, see y’all in 2017!

Tips For Creating New Years Resolutions You Will Keep (Plus, My Resolutions for 2017!)

December 30, 2016

2017 is around the corner and most people will be making a list of resolutions to become a better version of themselves in the new year. I am all about goal setting and believe that others should be too. Typically, there is one big problem with setting resolutions for oneself. While we may be passionate about making lifestyle changes at first, the novelty quickly wears off and we fall off the wagon. So what do you do to keep that motivation going? I have some tips to help you see success with all of those resolutions you have set for the coming year!

  1. Make a vision board-So this an old school concept, but I have found it to be pretty effective. Creating a vision board and placing it where you will consistently see it, will help you to visualize your goals and keep them in the forefront of you mind. Although I personally enjoy the traditional method of cutting pictures out of magazines, you can draw your vision board, create a digital version, or do a mixture of all of the above !
  2. Be realistic and specific– It is always great to set the bar high for yourself, but if you set the bar too high, you will most likely get discouraged and give up before you even get started. Also, try and be as specific as possible when setting your goals. It is great to have these aspirations, but you will have difficulty getting started if you have no concrete plan of action. (i.e. instead of saying I will drink more water. Say, I will drink one glass of water with each meal)
  3. Plan for obstacles/roadblocks-Lets face it, life happens. So have a plan for obstacles that you may encounter while trying to achieve your goals. It will be easier for you to move past any roadblocks you may encounter if you have already thought of ways to get around them in advance.
  4. Check in with yourself-It is always a good idea to re-evaluate your goals on the regular basis. As you move throughout the year, you will find that your goals may change. So it is important to look at what goals you set previously to see if any changes need to be made or some goals need to be added.
  5. Get an accountability partner-Motivation is key to helping you be successful with your resolutions, but it is not always easy to maintain. For some people, it may be helpful to  have a person to join in a goal with you, or simply be your cheerleader. This person can help remind you why you set your goal in the first place or acknowledge the hard work you have been putting in if you find your motivation starting to fall off.
  6. Reward yourself-Reaching a goal is a victory and should be celebrated! So when you are detailing your plans for your resolutions, set a reasonable reward for yourself. That way, you can have something else as motivation, in addition to, bettering yourself.

Now…here are some of my own resolutions for 2017 * This is not my full and detailed list*

  1. Become more intentional with my time-Life is short and the older I get, the more that I appreciate that fact. So, I would like to re-evaluate the way I currently use, or in some cases, waste, my time.
  2. Learn a new skill-Although I am not always a fan of a super structured learning environment, I enjoy learning. It is very important to me to continue to push myself into learning new things and I intend to do that this year.
  3. Vacation More-In the past, I never made vacations a priority. Now that I’m older, I realized that I have had a lot of missed opportunities to see the world, and I don’t want to continue in that pattern.
  4. Create a passive income-For those who don’t know, passive income is a  way for you to consistently earn money, but does not require much effort. I have been looking into different ways to earn passive income for the past few months. So for 2017, I have decided I would like to create at least one way to earn passive income.

So there you have it. Hopefully you will be able to utilize some of these tricks to help you be successful with your New Year’s resolutions. Comment below and let me know what some of your resolutions will be and as always, don’t forget to subscribe!

December 7, 2016

Almost every year my husband and I our late putting up our Christmas décor. This year, I was determined to be on top of things! As we were pulling out the decorations, I decided I wanted to change up the color scheme a little. I made a list that consisted of about three items and headed to the store.
