It’s time to for you to get ready. You go to your closet to find that perfect outfit. The one that fits, is on trend, and makes you feel like you kind of have your life together. Instead, you have been sifting through your clothes for 4o minutes, nothing fits right, everything you pull out looks dated. You give up and end up curled in a ball on top of the clothes you have thrown into the “no” pile on the floor. Now you’re running late, you despise everyone, and you start thinking of ways you can get out of whatever plans you have. Without admitting the real reason, of course. You are frustrated with your wardrobe. Has anyone ever been here? I know I have! That’s why I had to take control of my closet. Now that the getting dress meltdowns have ended, I decided to share my steps that helped me create a wardrobe I love and will hopefully help you too!
Discover your style-This is the fun part. Go online or on Pinterest and create a board with outfits you like or inspire you. Also, go through some current photos of yourself. Exam which outfits you felt good wearing and what really flattered your shape. What you will probably discover from all these pictures is that there is a common theme. You may even find that you always repeat the same outfit with different pieces or, what some describe as a “uniform”. What you may also find is that there a large disconnect between the items you currently have and the style you are looking to have. Either way, embrace your uniform. This will make it easier for you to decide what pieces to keep or buy for your wardrobe. It does not make sense to have a closet full of skirts and dresses if you pick the jeans and tee to wear 9 times out of 10.
Cleaning out your wardrobe– This one should be a given, but the next step you should take is examining what you currently have. So, take absolutely everything out of your closet. Then be extremely picky about what will return. Use the “if this was in the store, would I purchase it again?” method. Also, decide if the items goes with your uniform and the direction you are trying to take your style. Take the time to try everything on. If it no longer fits or is damaged-get rid of it. Getting rid of it could mean selling it on a website or app, swapping items with friends, donating it, or discarding if it is no longer wearable.
Organize and Prettify– Yes, I said prettify. There is so much more appeal in getting dressed when things are organized and aesthetically pleasing. Also, you should now have plenty of room to spare in your closet if you were truly brutal with your purging process. More is just more in the case of clothes. It is actually beneficial to have a smaller wardrobe lined with pieces you love and make sense for your current lifestyle. Highly consider storing out -of -season pieces or creating a special rack for your current season/new purchase items. This will help keep certain items in view and make it easy to find an outfit that is appropriate for the season. Unless, you live in Texas. Then good luck trying to figure out what season we are in!
Fill the holes– Now that you have discovered your style and curated your current wardrobe, it is time to fill any holes you may have. Firstly, cover the basics. If you aren’t sure what the basics for a wardrobe are, stay tuned- I may do a post on that in the future. For now, just know that the basics are versatile pieces that usually serve as the base of an outfit. Once you have the basics covered, start to shop for seasonal items that are on trend or statement pieces that will keep your wardrobe fresh and current. Try to refrain from buying more that five pieces per season because, you probably won’t wear everything. Instead, refer back to your style inspiration board and think about your “uniform”. Then, look at what is in style and spend a little extra money on quality items that will blend nicely with your current wardrobe and lifestyle. Also, when considering purchasing a piece, think of your wardrobe and try and make three different outfits with the item. If you can’t, really reconsider your purchase because, it probably is not something that is fitting for you.
Well, I know that it seems like a lot of work, but it is worth it. Trust me, when you stop crying on your closet floor you will thank me!
